Now & Then

Fletcher Smith's Jewelers first opened in 1906 as J. J. Livingston Jewelers. Mr. Livingston owned several retail establishments in the small community of Conway and at some point decided to sell the jewelry store to a young typesetter employed at the Log Cabin Democrat. In 1919, Fletcher Smith Sr. purchased the store and changed the name to "Harton & Smith, Jeweler and Optometrist. The optometrist is long gone but the Smith family has remained. Located at 1115 Oak Street in historic downtown Conway the store has survived World Wars I and II, the Great Depression, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the conflicts in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. Fletcher Smith's Jewelers is a history lesson in itself and has become a local tradition, a true example of the American dream. Today, Fletcher Smith, III and his wife, Sherry, carry on as 3rd generation owners of the "Oldest Jewelry Store in Arkansas".

During the 1940's and 50's the store housed a beauty parlor with a balcony overlooking the sales floor and carried a wide variety of merchandise including luggage, lamps, mixers, china, phonographs, AND jewelry. Although many things have changed since 1919, Fletch and Sherry have remained dedicated to the family tradition of quality and integrity in every aspect of the business. That dedication has earned them two (2) C.A.R.A.T. awards for jewelry design. In 1999 the Arkansas Jewelers Association, a body of their peers, honored them as Arkansas Jewelers of the Year in recognition of their leadership and integrity within the industry. Locally, the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce honored the store as 2006 Small Business of the Year and in 2008 presented Fletch and Sherry with the Good Neighbor Award in recognition of their personal dedication to the community.

Because customer service is always the focus at Fletcher Smith's Jewelers, Fletch and Sherry upgraded the repair shop to include laser technology in 2007, making them one of only a handful in the state with this capability. This leading edge technology made it possible to expand repair capability to include all metal types and include same day eyeglass repair as an offering to the community. Virtually every piece of jewelry can now be repaired at Fletcher Smith's Jewelers. Fletch and Sherry view it as just one more way to respond to the needs of their customers.

To keep up with the needs of an ever changing marketplace, Fletch and Sherry have also installed a complete gem lab, staffed by Cindy Hudson, GG, GIA and have expanded their services to offer complete custom design for those customers who want a truly one of a kind piece of wearable art. The lines offered for sale in the store are carefully selected for their fresh style, quality, and beauty.

"Make a customer, not a sale" is the store philosophy and a Smith family tradition. Fletch and Sherry are just as dedicated to it today as Fletcher Smith, Sr. and his wife Lutie were in 1919.
